Over the past 30 years we have learned so much about taking good care of our pets, right? We feed them "premium" high dollar pets foods, give them tasty packaged treats, vaccinate them yearly, bathe them with expensive shampoos, give them heartworm preventative, use flea collars or flea and tick preventative, brush their teeth, and get yearly checkups with our vets.

Then why are our pets not healthier? Why, instead, are they getting more and more humanlike diseases such as allergies, diabetes, thyroid problems, cancer, and on and on? Why are their coats not so shiny anymore, and they seem to scratch and itch all the time? Why are they so lazy and sleep all the time? Why do they still smell bad, have waxy ears, and bad plaque on their teeth?

The biggest problem points to nutrition, or lack thereof. But I feed my pet a high premium pet food recommended by my vet you might say. Exactly – that, however, is the problem. These so-called premium foods are full of "byproducts", corn meal, and many other things our pets were never designed to eat nor utilize in their bodies. The preservatives alone are not allowed in human products so how could our pets be expected to digest these toxins without repercussions to their health? The "byproducts" are things that should just be destroyed and not used for anything let alone pet food.

Another problem is exactly the thing you thought were protecting them: yearly vaccinations. This is a huge problem because the rabies vaccine is the one that is mandated by law and it the very worst one for your pets. These yearly vaccinations are not only not necessary but could be a major contributor to the diseases that are plaguing our pets. Vaccinosis is the result of all this over vaccinating and possibly even the culprit behind all the diagnosed diseases resulting in the decline of the health of pets.

Combine poor food, over vaccinating, with the toxins from flea collars, pet toothpaste, packaged treats, and preventative medicines and you've got unhealthy, immune suppressed pets that lack the energy to do much more than sleep.

Okay, so now what? Fortunately there are solutions and the best one to start with is food; preferably raw. If that doesn't appeal to you there are other solutions and answers to help you help your pets on the road to wellness. The Boston Terrier

The Boston is among a small group of dogs who were "made in America". Originally it was bred from crosses between the bulldog and the terrier, and careful selection has produced a dog that is consistently marked and very true to type. He has distinctive white markings on a background of black, seal or brindle. Ears are upright and may be cropped or natural. Backskull is flat, muzzle is short with a well defined stop. His nose is of the braccocephalic type and he can be heard to snore at night. Most dogs with this type of nose are not highly athletic in nature since they do not have the breathing room required to be highly active, especially in the heat.

Also most dogs of this type tend to have some problems with natural birth because of the large head, so he is not used a great deal in the "puppy mills" as a breeding dog. therefore his numbers are small in comparison to other small breeds, (he is not "over-bred") and this has helped to protect the breed from too many health problems. The eyes are somewhat large and round and protruding. Because of this he requires a daily eye inspection as he may be susceptible to eye injury. Other than a history of skin problems there do not seem to be any other notable health concerns. His movement should be free and easy, never lumbering in gait.

The Boston is a delight to own and train. He is generally easy to housebreak. If brought up with children he is tractable and gentle in nature. He was bred as a companion dog and despite his title is a member of the non-sporting Group, not truly a "terrier" in nature or habit. He is adaptable to a small apartment and does not need an inordinate amount of exercise. Usually he is under 25 pounds in weight. Bostons are generally easy going and not prone to pick a fight.

He is a popular figure in the show ring. Coat care is minimal, all he needs is a quick wipe down. He is not heavily used as an agility dog since his bulldog background can lead to breathing problems if overly exercised. He does however make a fine therapy dog because of his smaller size and winning personality, especially because he can be so easily trained to do tricks and was specifically bred as a companion dog. His first love is to be with people. He was bred first and foremost as a pet and because of his distinctive markings became popular as a show dog and a dog to "show off"; it is considered stylish to own a Boston.

Pose Your Dog For Holiday Photos

The Holidays are just around the corner. This year you'd like to something unique with your Christmas cards. You know your friends would get a kick out of seeing your pet either on your Christmas card or a picture in it. Getting Fido to pose for that perfect Kodak moment is another story though. Here are some tips to make it easier on you & your dog.

You have two options. First is to take your dog to a professional photographer. The other is to do it yourself. While there are many qualified photographers out there, this article will cover the do-it-yourselfer. With a little patience and help from a friend it's actually pretty easy & the photos you get will show the dog more relaxed than if you bring them into a busy mall photographer.

Now that you made the decision to take your Dogs' holiday photos yourself. The first step is to choose an appropriate background. A festively decorated fireplace is always a nice choice. If you have a small dog, a miniature Christmas tree will look great – maybe even decorate it with a doggie theme. What to consider when choosing your backdrop is the number of dogs, the size of them, their coat colors and the weather conditions if you're taking them outside. Choose a backdrop that complements your dogs coat color & accommodates nicely the size and number of dogs. For instance, your white bichon will be washed out if you take her picture outside in the fresh snow and your chocolate lab will blend in with your brown carpeting next to your fireplace.

Once you have your backdrop chosen, you'll have to decide if you're going to dress your dog up. Whether it's a cute holiday sweater or silly antlers, either choose items that they've worn before or let them get accustomed to it for a several days before your shoot. Or you can just let the dog go au-natural. I'm sure they'll thank you for it.

You're almost ready. You've chosen the backdrop & have it decorated, you've had time for your dog to get used to wearing silly Santa hats and it's time to get down to work. If you have a friend willing and able to help you, this always makes the task easier. The main thing to remember is to keep it light & fun. Start by a quick 1-2 minute training refresher. Have on hand small, but really delicious treats - the kind that your dog does anything for. Go through sit, stay, down. Keep it simple and fun, but not highly playful. You want your dog to be paying attention to you, but not jumping up and down in excitement.

Work with your dog in five minute increments. Bring them to where you want them posed and in what position: sitting, standing or lying down. It works best to use a digital camera for these types of shots. This allows you to take as many shots as you'd like & then delete the ones that don't turn out. If you feel yourself start to get frustrated, take a break. The dogs can sense frustration and become tense. This will come through in the photos as well. Your dog will look stiff and unnatural. This break sometimes is all the dog & you need to get it all together & finish off that perfect holiday photo.

The two main things to remember in taking your dogs' Holiday photo is preparation and patience. Have your setting prepared. Your dog groomed & accustomed to any clothes you'll put on him & then a little bit of patience when working with them will go a long way.

Birds The Whooping Crane

Whooping cranes are an endangered species although the population was never high due to over hunting in the 1800s. In the 1940s, the population decreased even more to less then 20. Due to the Whooping Crane's low population, bird care organizations do not allow them to go outside a protected area and they are now protected by law. Their habitat is very limited because they need clean wetlands, and there are only a few left. Notably, a small area of Wood Buffalo National Park in Northern Canada and in the Southern US states near the coast. Organizations are working to increase the crane population that today is about 377.

Whooping cranes have white feathers, long pointed bills and long necks. Cranes also have long thin black legs. However, they do not use their legs for swimming as when cranes are not standing in the water, they fly around their environment with the neck straight out in front and legs trailing behind. Cranes have noticeable black tips on the ends of each wing that you can see when they are flying with their young. Younger cranes do not have white feathers, although they are almost the same height as older cranes; they have brown feathers that gradually turn white when they grow older.

Whopping cranes eat snails, larval insects, leeches, frogs, minnows, small rodents and berries. When whooping cranes are in Texas, they will eat shellfish and small fish from the ocean.

Previous generations' migration routes help Whooping Cranes learn to migrate. Smaller cranes will follow their parents from the fall nesting grounds to the winter nesting grounds. Many cranes will have previously used the same migration route for thousands of years and continue to do so today. Researchers also help cranes to migrate by teaching them how to follow a truck on a set migration path they want them to follow so they can memorize it themselves. They also use cranes from the wild and set them free, then they recapture them and release them again. The researchers do this in the hopes that the cranes will connect the dots during migration.

These methods are effective, but the most successful method is the ultra light aircraft method, because it closely replicates the parents leading their children south during migration. Ultra lights are the only aircraft that can fly slowly enough (without stalling) so that the cranes can follow. Normally chicks are attracted to the first creature that nurtures them. To teach the chicks, prior to hatching, a recording of the aircraft is played to them, and then in 7 days the researchers introduce the chicks to ultra lights themselves.

What Makes Humankind Unique To All Other Animals

The age old question of what makes humankind unique to all other animals is a fascinating question indeed. It is one which man himself would surely like to know the answer too and one, which a modern day online think tank took up Recently. One of the principal investigators and researchers in the group asked another question of interest. When was the first mention of the question in ancient philosophy of what makes mankind different and the researcher stated:

"First we need to establish the point of origin the question."

Yes, that would be interesting to establish the origin of the question. Who made mention of it first? The biblical references might be of interest to the reader of the research; you know the "god made man in his image" thing. I am not a religious type, but I am of a "marketing type mind" and thus such a research project following scientific methods, which puts out a document will want folks to read it. And if such information is included then the report will be read by more people cover to cover if you make mention of this.

In fact "Celebrating Being Human" might be a good thing for humans as it puts them together in a "common cause" and brings them back together (marketing mind at work). You know if humankind had a "common cause" or some sort of bonding, maybe they would not fight so much (have wars).

So, in starting the introduction to this research white paper, why not make references to many different cultures and writings; ancient, present, etc. Maybe even a famous Sci Fi author quote or two? In which case perhaps all religious references to that point might be worthy to mention too? Kind of like this:

Even if Humans are found to be animals, which I am certain of, at least they can be happy to know that they are of the highest known level of animals, rather than the lowest form of another potential grouping. Interesting topic of conversation indeed, so perhaps you will think on this in 2006.
